On this day we met up with Cinthia, her brother and her childhood friend to check out Pork Highway. The Pork Highway, or La Ruta del Lechón, is a roughly three-mile stretch of Route 184, which is located in a central area of Puerto Rico called Guavate.
Oh yes, by chance Cinthia and I just happened to be in Puerto Rico at the same time! Cinthia is from Puerto Rico so it was so nice to see her home and have her share some of her favorite things about her island.
On our drive over to Pork Highway we happened upon some street art. Sean actually suggested we stop and for me to take some pictures. You know I jumped out of the car quickly in case he changed his mind. But that Sean sure knows the ways to my heart.
There are dozen of causal roadside restaurants and the restaurants specialize in slow-roasted whole pigs. I believe that Anthony Bourdain actually shared his Pork Highway experience. We went on a Tuesday which I hear is during a very slow period and per Cinthia from Thursday through Sunday it is buzzing, full of life, music and people. Think can't find parking and waiting for an hour + for food. But she says that the experience can't be beat and the food is usually worth the wait.
Besides crispy bacon I don’t eat pork (didn’t have it growing up so I don’t care to have it) so I enjoyed chicken while everyone else had pork. Our food was delicious and I wish that we had time to go during the busy days that way we could have had the full experience. Either way, we really enjoyed it and I highly recommend that if you have PR on your list to make sure to do it as well.
After Pork Highway, we checked into the Sheraton which was the second place we stayed at while in Puerto Rico. The hotel was great and also had a casino which is probably why Sean booked it in the first place. They had an incredible pool and the views from the pool were outstanding! I forgot to take pictures of our room but I loved our room and our view wasn't bad either.
For dinner that night we went to Barrachina Restaurant that claims to be the place that invented the piña colada. It was more of a touristy restaurant and the food was OK but we had the sweetest gentleman sing “Just the two of us” one day before our 10th anniversary and it made the experience so much fuller. It was definitely one of my most favorite experiences while we were in PR.
We ended up back at our hotel for the night to have some casino fun. I always say, wherever there’s a casino, Sean will find it.
How fun that you and your friend were both in Puerto Rico at the same time! It looks beautiful and sounds like there is so much to check out. I love seeing different street art. We keep saying we need to make a visit and hopefully we can make that happen soon.
ReplyDeleteWe were so excited to be in PR at the same time! Even crazier was that we were on the same plane to PR!
DeleteIt is beautiful and there is so much to do and eat! Street art is everywhere and I hope you get to make a visit soon. You'll love it!
I adore that picture of you and Sean.
ReplyDeleteI love that you and Cinthia were there at the same exact time! How fun !
Love the art, and I officially want some pork ribs lol
That pool looks beautiful, so did the hotel, and so did you !!! I'm not much of a gambler, but did Sean win anything?
Thank you :)
DeleteMe too! It was so fun and made the trip more special. Hahaha, they said the pork ribs were good!
Thank you again. And no! No winning for Sean this time, haha!
