Dear Martin Luther King

I was inspired by you the very first time I learned who you were. I was intrigued by the fact that you had a dream and decided to share it with the world, even though you knew that so many would hate you for it.

I use to imagine having a dream that would change the world. I use to wonder, would I share it with millions, even if I believed I would be killed for it? Would I have the courage to stand in front of those who hated me, to stand up for what I believed in?

I always answered no. I was not strong enough. I couldn't be hated. I couldn't be killed.

As a young girl, I didn't realize that your dream made my world shine brighter. I was given the chance to live without hating the color of my skin. Given the chance to go to school with all races and never forced to sit at the back of the bus. I was given the chance to know that water fountains at school was for everyone.

Because of you, I can love my husband in broad daylight and he can love me in return. I can't imagine you not sharing your dream. If you hadn't, where would I be? Where would my hubby be? We wouldn't be together.

So now I answer yes. I am strong enough. I can be hated. I can be killed. If my dream could make this world a better place, it is my duty to share it.

Today, I am thankful for your dream, for your message, for your sacrifice. You did not die in vain.

Happy Birthday Mr. King. May your dream live on.

  1. Faith,

I'm w/you. My children and I had the opportunity to visit the King Center two summers ago. All I can say is that he was an awesome man. I reposted a tribute to Dr. King today. I wrote it last year because of my children who I too want to be able to dream and have faith that their dreams are possible. Right now, that is all they know because they haven't been confronted w/the experiences that Dr. King went through for us. I'm thankful for his work and sacrifices which eventually led to his untimely death. The hope started w/one man and a dream and now it is in our hands to carry on in our own lives and to share with our children.

  4. Beautiful sentiment. I, too, think of the sacrifices he made and marvel at the fact that I might not even have my family had he and others not made those sacrifices. I am very grateful. Life is better for all of us because of the courage of many humble individuals, and their willingness to be used to show the power of love over hate.

  5. I really enjoy this post. I think that some people just see this day as another day off, but it is a day to remember some of the sacrifices that others have made for us. I think that that thought needs to be remembered all year though so that we can end so much hate and seperation. Lovin this post.

  10. Gosh... I can honestly say you took the words right out of my mouth. It's crazy to think how different our lives would be if he hadn't stood up for his beliefs. Life without Matt just doesn't seem livable. Thanks for posting this Faith!

  14. *Slow Clap* Amazing love this post, Faith! I was telling my husband the same yesterday. Where would be if it hadn't been for MLK and the numerous of civil rights leaders that died/risked their lives for our freedom. Very well said, lady :)
