Friendships

Friendships are one of the things you choose in life. You decide who you want to share your utmost secrets with and the shoulder you want to cry on. You decide who fits your personality best and who you can trust with anything.

After college, I worried a lot. I was worried that these amazing friendships that I had made over the last 4 years would end. I knew that we would no longer see each other everyday, eat together everyday or party together on the weekend.

Shopping and movie nights were going to be a thing of the past. Talking about boys and watching SATC re-runs was not going to be a daily thing. Miles was going to be the culprit. Miles was going to change everything and it broke my heart. I didn't graduate with smiles, I graduated with tears.

I worried if I was going to be able to call and talk about nothing and whether my friends were still going to find the topic interesting. Was my friend going to change and decide that I wasn't cool anymore? I had decided that I didn't want to make new friends. I had my friends and that was that.

Years later, I don't see my best friends often. To be honest, I am lucky if I get to see some of them once or twice a year but it amazes me how we can just start right where we left off, as though no months have passed. We still laugh about the same thing and shake our heads at the same nonsense. We still people watch and complain that we ate too much chocolate.

Although the years have passed we still feel the same. Our friendships are still the same. We are older and a bit wiser. Certain choices we made then we won't make now. But those choices led us to each other. Led us to believe that we were soulmates. The type of friend that we might not call everyday but if something went wrong you know that friend would pick up their phone no matter the time to talk with you.

I am grateful for these friendships. I am grateful that we still have each other. I am grateful that our children will have no choice but to be friends. This friendship is a lifetime bond. I am so glad I chose you and that you chose me.

  1. Faith,

You are very blessed to have such friendships and w/so many women. I think one of the fun things will be to see yourselves in 10, 20, 30+ years. Hang on as tightly as you can and if once or twice a year is all you get, then enjoy every moment.

  2. Oh I like this post- makes me want to put up a post about my besties ;) thanks for the idea (now if I can find time to write). I'm glad you get to see your friends (even of it’s once or twice a year) - those special times with best friends are so worth it. I've managed to keep the same set of friends (adding a few here and there) since middle school and I'm lucky to say that I get to see most of my friends at least every couple of months- hope that doesn't change.

  3. This post really warmed my heart. It's really great to have a solid support system outside of your family. Even though you don't get to see them often. I really enjoyed looking at all these photos. A walk down memory lane.

P.S. You look gorgeous with that fro in the second picture. Gives me an idea of what your hair will be like soon. Much love!

  5. Lucky you! I didn't have friends like that in college or even now. I just have a few, which is fine but not a little mini network of besties and all those wonderful memories that go along with it.

  7. what a great post Faith!! I know what you mean -- it is hard to find someone else who is willing to keep that friendship going even with miles or years in between visits.
My very good friend and I lost touch for about 3 years, we reconnected right before I got engaged and it is like we didn't miss a moment =) those are the kinds of friendships to cherish
So glad you have those kinds of girls in your life!

  8. Lovely and warm post, it make wanna call all my friends and tell them how I am happy to have them in my life. And to know that no matter the distance that seem to come between us - because now I live in Canada and they live in Europe - they are still my heart.

    Lovely Faith :)!

  10. I definitely know how you feel! I don't get to see my college besties nearly enough, but it's always magical when we do get together.

  11. I can relate. Being prior military and military spouse, friends come and go :( But it's always nice when we reunite again...like no time pass. Same with family. Great post!
