I'll do the dishes .....

When the hubs and I moved in together, I learned early on that he was a neat freak. He would pick up my shoes and put them in the closet. He would pick up my coats and hang them in the closet. He would do the dishes. He would do the laundry. He would cook dinner. He would clean the apartment.

How did I get so lucky?

One year, after Thanksgiving dinner (at my parent's house) my mom noticed that Sean went straight to the kitchen and started doing dishes. She asked me, "Does he always do this?" It is a foreign concept to my mom that men actually know how to do dishes. I smiled all proud and said, "Yes." She looked at me like I had nothing to be proud of but later admitted that she was impressed.

It isn't that I am not a neat freak, Sean has spoiled me. He has spoiled me so much that I have become a lil lazy. OK, very lazy. I'm just trying to limit the name calling, ya know.

Why should would I put the dishes away if my stud muffin is gonna do it? He looks a lot better doing it than I do. Besides he is the one who can't stand seeing dishes pile up. I know, I know!

The reason I should IS because it really is the better thing to do. This marriage is a partnership. I am aware of that but sometimes most of the time I pretend I don't hear that better part of me screaming, "Do the dishes!" I have something called selective hearing. Anyone have a cure?

When we bought the house I promised to be better. And I have gotten better. I pick up after myself; meaning my shoes go in the closet and do not sit in the living room until hubby picks them up. The house is clean and 50% 45% is because of me! But I continue to fail in an area called dishes. Oh, I blow in this area. It stinks that the excuse that my nails are breaking off doesn't work anymore because we own a dishwasher.

I even put a picture right across from our sink to help keep me happy and cheery while doing them.

That picture alone should make me thrilled to do the dishes. Riiiight.

The hubby decided to do an experiment on me last week. It was called, "LetsseehowlongittakesforFaithtorealizethatIamnottouchingthe dishesthisweek."

This was the outcome of the experiment.

I can't believe I am showing you this but if I am going to do this I might as well be honest.

So in order to be a better wife in this partnership, I need to step up my game. It is unacceptable that I did that. (Bowing head in shame) I have to give 50% - 100% in housework. It's only right. And I know it will make our marriage all the much better! :)

Note to self: Picking out decorations does not equal any percentage in the housework.

To redeem myself a little; I am a killer cook!

  1. Oh Faith, I know it's not easy to admit fault and point out where your short comings are. I COMMEND you for stepping up and calling yourself out. I'm totally serious. Good. For. You.

That said- I'm still waiting for that "ah ha" moment from Hubs. I feel like I'm the only one that does the cleaning, picking up, organizing, cooking, . I hate nagging though bc.... well, it doesn't work. So, I think I will show your post to Hubs- I'll let you know if he takes the hint ;)

  3. I was a neat frek until I moved out of my mother's house and Hubby told me to relax, nowadays I am so relax that sometimes I forget to do the dishes for days.

Hubby has spoilt me on the cooking front as well. I have never being a cook enthus - but when I cook it is fab. Hubby on the other hand loves to cook so I let him cook his favourite dishes such as curry and thai. My family and some friends make me feel so guilty about it :(.

You are right marriage is patnership - I love doing the house cleaning and laundry so we work quite well together :).

  5. This made me smile. I do the dishes and my house. My husband does not do the dishes but yet wants to complain if I run the dishwasher.

  6. Ummm can I bring my husband to your house so your husband can teach him a few cleaning lessons? lol j/k ~ I do all of the housework! ALL OF IT! I don't mind it all that much because at least I know I'm cleaning it all the right way!

  7. it's good that you are trying at least. You have improved. im the neat freak in my house. It has go to be so much easier to be the "messy" one. The neat person cares and wants to pick up and the messy one is ok in either situation so they are always fine. I try not to nag either b/c it's got to get annoying. But so are messy counter tops.

  8. Oh that is way too funny! Sean and I are so alike! I can't stand a dish towel out of place... Matt could let things pile up for weeks. It literally makes my skin crawl! haha.
So proud of you for stepping up though! This is a huge step!

p.s. My parents were amazed that Matt cooks so well and actually helps around the house as much as he does. :)

  10. Good for you my dear! I'm shaking my own head at myself since my hubs is the same way and does about 90% of the household chores (ahhhh)! I mean, he folds his socks for gosh sakes. You've inspired me to get on the ball as well!

  13. WOW! You definitely scored a fab husband - mine pretty much writes, researches, reads, and takes out the trash. Oh, and he makes the bed every day, too - since i leave for work before he goes to campus. But no dishes! DARN! And he doesn't cook very well, either! If he's in charge of dinner, we totally eat out or he pulls the frozen pizza trick.

*Cute pic above the kitchen sink!

  14. Yay for a husband that does dishes!! Although I do feel you. My husband does some things for me that sometimes I certainly feel I take advantage of. We should give no matter what. I loved this post.

  15. Oh honey I have one in my house too and his name is Steven and yes he is my hubby although sometimes when he goes on a what I call a "cleaning spree" I don't like to claim his as suck because ticked especially when I'm not in the mood to clean (which is about 90% of the time).

  16. Oh Faith, the piled up dishes is a hot mess. But guess what, if dishes aren't your thing, don't go nuts. I'm sure there are things that you do that hubs doesn't or isn't as good at.

Don't front on decorating, it's a skill and makes for a pleasant house to come home to. You hooked your house up nicely. Girl, you're alright. :D

  17. This is a great post, so honest. I also am a slacker when it comes to the dishes. It's not fun, I can't blame you. The mister usually washes the dishes but has been complaining so I hear you lady, I am trying to step it up as well. Cheers to stepping it up!

  18. Seriously our men would be best friends!

  19. Hey - my kitchen layout is exactly the same as yours! Anyway, our household situation is exactly the opposite. I do just about everything. And it kinda sucks. You are a very lucky woman.

  20. Love your honesty! My husband is a neat freak, too. But I am way more thorough. I should say he's a straighten-up freak as he doesn't scrub anything! He does do the dishes and wash the table, but I cook the dinner! We agree that whoever cooks the other cleans up. That's a great place to start :)

  21. Your husband sounds like my hubby. I'm blessed. I'm happy, but I always know that I have to do my part. Now that I'm a stay at home, homeschooling mom, I appreciate his help even more. You are a very lucky woman and he will NEVER let you forget it...lol!!!!

  22. Dishes suck. It's fun to cook, but it's so not fun to clean up the mess afterwards!
