You might notice that my pictures look different than usual. Or maybe you don't and that's just a fail on my part. But if you do notice it is because I used Lightroom 5 to edit them. Sean got it for me for Christmas.

You're probably wondering why it took me so long to use it. Well, because I have no idea how to really use the program and I kinda think that my pictures look better straight out the camera than when it's edited. But that could just be my fear of looking like I don't know what I'm doing.
Which is in fact true.

I finally decided to just put myself out there and give it a shot because I know that editing is a person's stamp. No one edits the same (at least if you're not trying to mimic another person's style) and I won't learn how to edit if I don't try. So here's my first attempt.

It was actually fun to be honest but it took a while because I was not happy with any of the edits and I'm still not. I have a lot to learn.

I figured out how to shoot all my pictures in manual mode so I'm going to do the same with editing. So bear with my pictures for a little while, while I try to get this right.

Any tips you may have please let me know. I'll greatly appreciate it!

  1. Faith, you have such a natural love/passion for taking pictures. Perhaps professional photography is your calling?

Have you considered taking a couple classes at you local community college on photography, editing etc? and why not launch out as an amature photographer or an assistant to a professional.

I can imagine Faith doing what she LOVES as her new found career.

  3. The photos almost crashed my work computer but they were fabulous! Lol! The pics are very crisp- especially the one featuring crab legs, my very favorite seafood. I could reach out and taste it! The delicacy of the rose pic was awesomely captured too. I can actually get a feel of Seattle now and really want to check it out!

  6. Aye homeboy wearing a Seattle sweatshirt by the Paperworks shop kind of fine doe...

Moving on... I have Lightroom 5. I basically just fart around with it until I am happy with the outcome. I do buy VSCO Film (google it), and they are presets to make your pictures look super cool and film like. It's expensive... HOWEVER there are TONS of free presets on the web (google "free lightroom 5 presets") often times these help me achieve a look I am going for, and I tone do the brightness, contrast, etc as I see fit.

I LOVEEE the pictures and I think you did a great job.

I can't give any edit pointers/tips, as I just kind of wing it myself. :)

  9. That market looks awesome! I love those beautiful tulips and all the fresh looking fruits and veggies. Those star lanterns are so gorgeous.

I don't have any photography tips for you, you are way father along than I am! I need to get in a class someday when my work schedule calms down.

  10. You did a FABULOUS job! All the pictures look raw and almost "life-like". Does that make sense? I like it!

Girl, wish I could take better pics in manual mode. For now, I am still a work in progress.

  12. But I love the retro feel to them. They are gorgeous and you know exactly what you're doing. Stop trying to fool us good folk out here :P

I've never used Lightroom to edit because I have no clue how to work it myself. I'm a Photoshop girl but I've heard that Lightroom is so much better. Mayhap I shall try and we can toss suggestions at each other.

I love that you're so passionate about photography.

    xoxo

  14. i think you did great with your edit. i wish for lightroom but for now I use photoshop element 10 to edit some pictures. when I want a quick edit i use photoscape. i'm not confident when it comes to editing but i play around with tone, exposure and contrast. sometimes I like the outcome, other timesnot but all in all there is always room for improvement

  15. Love these pictures! Seattle is amazing. Your pictures made me even more nostalgic for that city! I could spend days...weeks exploring and feel like there would still be more to see. Doesn't hurt that my favorite movie is set there! ("Sleepless in Seattle")

  16. good luck with lightroom! I did notice something was slightly different with your photos but i couldn't quite put my finger on it.

I think trial and error is the way to figuring out your editing style. I'm still figuring out mine... and it's been like 3 years :P

I do want to make a point of saying this because you mentioned you thought your pics looked better straight out of the camera. I think (i'm guilty of this too) sometimes in the blogging world we become used to heavily edited and filtered photos when in reality, most photographers use a light touch.

also... places to start with editing? read about adjusting exposure, dodging and burning, sharpening and cloning, haha I used cloning today actually to remove a giant pole coming out of my head in one of my outfit pics!

anyways, I know you'll master lightroom 5 in no time :) intrigued to see what your signature editing style will be...

  26. I laughed out loud when you were talking about Sean being a smart man but then doing really dumb things. LOL, Derek does the same thing. I'm c'mon, you're the smartest person I know and you never remember my bbq sauce from Wendy's lol.

Your pictures are always great. Good for you for learning on your own. I have yet to get into editing but I know that is such a big piece of photography.

I agree with the commenter above, you should go into photography. You have the natural talent :)
