Content

Lately, I’ve begun to wonder if maybe I am too content.

Too content with where I am.

I have goals but they aren’t big ones.

They are ones that will be accomplished.

My dreams compared to others are so small.

Take my husband for example. He has big dreams.

He wants to do this and that and me, well, I’m fine.

I don’t know if the lessons from growing up by my parents to be content has actually become a negative.

Why is it that I don’t feel that I need more? That I need to be more. That I need to do more.

The life I live is not impressive and I am not doing anything to make it impressive.

Some may think this is a flaw. I often wonder if this is a flaw.

Maybe one day I will see that my life is grand, that maybe I have been given all my dreams already.

Maybe one day I’ll decide that I have to do more, be more, need more.

Until then, I’ll just continue to be content with where I am because at least I’m somewhere.

I'm right there with you! I feel so happy with where my life is right now, but sometimes I feel like I should be trying harder to make my life "better". I think it's a good thing that we're both content. It means we have pretty good lives! :)

I wish that I felt content. I think that you should be happy that you are.

There is something to be said for the more - pushing yourself in life and where you are, not necessarily so you can achieve something, but so you can live more fully, engage with others more deeply and love and feel more freely.

I struggle on the other end of the spectrum. I'm always very discontent and for me, I'm trying to find balance in striving for the more that I want and being content with where I am too. It's been my experience that our hearts will let us know when it's time for that push to more.

It sounds like your heart is enjoying what feels good and big and full right now. That is truly a gift!

I always say being content is a blessing and a curse. Have to find that balance!!!

Maybe you can be that support for your husband's big dreams??

peace, joy and contentment are our to be had from the Lord...if you're content, I'd say your exactly where your supposed to be! Most people never reach contentment!

Personally, i think it's good that you're content with your life. After all, in the first Harry Potter, when Harry was at the Mirror of Erised, Dumbledore said "The happiest man on earth would look into the mirror and see only himself, exactly how he is." If you're content with your life how it is, then that to me just means that you're happy.

Being content is a blessing. I'm so happy that you are content. Live in the moment that you are in and if something comes up that you want or dream of go after it. Right now you have a pretty cool guy who has big dreams and since you're content you are in the perfect position to support his dreams without having to give up or change your own.

I only wish I could be content right now.

Being content is what the people who are pushing for more, aspiring for more, needing more actually want. You've achieved that. It's always nice to set goals and milestones for yourself. They don't need to measure against any one else's as long as you are happy with them. So sit back and enjoy your happiness :D

I really relate to this.
I had a similar conversation with a friend about 2 years ago and she was lamenting the fact that she hadn't accomplish her goals by this milestone birthday. I'd never really set any such goals for myself, I don't know why, I guess I've always been one of those "bloom where you are planted" persons. I guess that equates to being content, and like you I guess I'm somewhere and I'm fine with that.

"at least i'm somewhere" flawless.

i always have big dreams and huge goals. the reverse isn't always the best either. because it shows that you arent' content in at all.

appreciating what i am doing and accomplishing is just as important as looking forward.

Faith, being happy & content is a blessing. Life is short, and I think that as long as it's a happy life, then that is the most successful that anyone can get.

I love your honesty. I think being content is what life is all about. If you are truly happy with your life then I think that shows you are living in the moment and are appreciative with what you have! Sometimes I wished I could do this more.

Oh my goodness...to be content with your life is what we all should strive to be. when we want what doesn't make us content is when we are happy! Be content in your contentedness---if that's a word. You inspire us all Faith to be content with where we are in our lives!

I don't think there is anything wrong with being content! I also don't think that everyone's dreams have to be along the lines of: starting a new company, finding a cure for cancer & AIDS, climbing Mt. Everest, etc. I do think that we should always strive to be the best versions of ourselves possible! Maybe if you set goals like: be a better wife, keep in touch with my family more, work harder at work, pray more, exercise more, etc, you'll find that your life will be even more fulfilling!!!!!

Don't worry about everyone else. Enjoy the beautiful life you have!! SMILE! :)

oh... sometimes i feel the same way! i always compare myself to hubs who has more measurable life goals. i'm not really into compiling $$$$$ or attaining status and rarely stressed out because the lack thereof LOL, but i think the most important thing in life is to feel happy! :D

OMG! I feel the same way. "I finally stopped trying to decide who I want to be and just allowed myself to be who I am." I actually wrote that sentence in a blog post a couple years ago...didn't realize I remembered that until now but anyways! I too don't have any grand aspirations and I always have wished that I did. I want to want more but you can't force that kind of thing. I've never been ambitious etc and I'm just barely coming to grips with that.

I'm right there with you. The things I wanted most in life were to be a teacher, get married, and have a baby and then stay home with that baby. I've done all of that. Sure, I want another child someday, but I am just happy with the way things are right now :)

We could always use more money in the bank, more clothes, cleaner house, but I agree, content is good because at least we are there :)
I think I'm so boring sometimes. I would almost take a Saturday afternoon nap then go on a vacation :)

Being content and happy with what you have is such a blessing.
Most of the time we base our happiness on the next thing and miss out on being happy right now. Like, I'll be happy when I get engaged, then get married, then have a child, then have a second child, then have a house etc. It's like it's never ending and we don't enjoy the moment. Good on you for enjoying the moment. I am trying to do the same now too, enjoy every second and not wait for the next step for happiness.
Sorry for writing a book but you really hit home with this topic.

i dont think it's a flaw at all.....i think it's an extreme blessing. who says goals have to be huge hard-to-reach ones? you seem to have such a happy life....and i know you're always an inspiration to me! but i love the honesty of this post!

Hi! I just found your blog, and I read this first post and just had to comment! I wish I could be you, I am rarely content and it annoys me. I am always looking for more, wanting more, dreaming bigger..... my boyfriend is just like you and is always content and I am so jealous! I think both can be good in their owns ways, so i wanted to tell you, if you are content and happy then thats all that matters! so happy I found you, now following!

xx

You took the words directly out of my mouth.
I have the same exact feelings of being content with just the normal things in life, nothing extravagant. I also have very realistic and attainable goals.
The part that worries me is a sometimes feel as I am settling with all of this.
But I am slowly learning that being content is a a positive attribute. I believe our parents raised us to be happy in the moment for a reason And that when it is our time we will have all that we wished for and life will be even better than we ever imagined.

I love that you're content. That's why most people have so many goals....to reach the level of contentment you have. I think maybe you should make a 30 before 30 (for example) bucket list. Include some fun, short-term goals and a few serious long-term goals.

Melina said...

I think it's fantastic that you're content, a blessing even! I've witnessed so many people get caught up in grand goals that it starts to make them think they aren't enough, which is sad when they definitely are! So goals are great to have, but being content is a wonderful thing as well! :)

I'm on a content train myself...maybe not career wise but lately I've been happy in all other areas.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being content! I think of being content as being happy, and what could be better than being happy with yourself and your life? :)

I don't think being content is a flaw, I think it's a blessing. And possibly the secret to happiness :)

I think it's good to be content. I wish I could be more! I'm always striving for something more and this means not always living in the present or being thankful for what I do have, and instead focus on what I don't have and want. So if you're content then it means you are happy in your life and don't need change.

Totally agree with Pegster, being content in life is a blessings not a negative.
