When I got home last night, Sean was busy watching the news with Izabella sprawled out all over him. You would think that has anything to do with the story but it does not. I gave them both hugs and kisses then sat on the recliner.
Few seconds later, Sean says very nonchalantly, “Oh look it’s your old bosses. They are going to prison for 30 years.”
And sure enough on the screen are my two ex-bosses. Guilty verdict found. All sorts of fancy things they were found guilty of including money laundering. It seems that they stole millions of dollars from trusting investors. Based on the news, things came to light in 2009 but it took a while for it to go to trial, etc.
Now let us back track a bit. I had graduated from college 11 months earlier. I know that it was 11 months earlier because I lasted at the job before this one for 8 months, and the one before that for 3 months.
I worked as a front desk supervisor at a hotel. I made great money but because I was a supervisor I never had weekends off. Or the holidays and I needed the holidays. I would get days off on Sundays only and if someone called out I was responsible for their shift. I was working all sorts of crazy shifts, at not so fun hours. And being a single gal, working late at night, with random strangers coming into the hotel it wasn’t exactly the safest. Although, I did have a bunch of basketball player hotel guests who would stay with me in the lobby during evening shifts to keep me company.
That 8 months was the longest 8 months of my life. I had lots of money in my bank account because I had no life. I did not do anything but work. I finally decided to look for a new job. A job that gave me the weekends off. I needed to hang out with my girlfriends and I had just started dating a new guy that I kinda liked named Sean. I didn’t care about a pay cut because I had loads of money saved at this point.
I put my resume up on Craigslist and within a week I got a call. I was offered a job as a receptionist making $21,000 a year. Huge pay cut but at that time I did not care. It was the easiest job of my life. I spent most of my time answering phones and myspacing Sean. (Oh how I wish I blogged then) I knew that I couldn’t work there for more than a year because my money was going to run out and I would get bored.
There were a few things that I found fishy about this company. Like the fact that my bosses were always out golfing, enjoying the life in their expensive cars, homes, fancy dinners and clothes. Yes, I understand some people live like this but I just didn’t understand how they had this company but were hardly ever working.
Once I walked in my boss’ office to find him watching porn. I don’t understand why he asked me to come in if he was watching porn. I understand some men watch porn but the problem was that it was a dark skinned black girl on the screen and from that day I felt like it was time for me to go. I told Sean and he was like, “Yup, time to go, your year is up.” And just like that I was gone.
And boy am I glad I did because to keep some of my past co-workers out of trouble, they had to testify against our ex-bosses. Granted I had no idea what was going on but how awkward would that have been?
So that’s my story of working for criminals. Not that exciting when I think about it. No guns, no mobsters, no murders.
But still, I probably have to take that company off of my resume now. How am I going to explain where a year of my life went?
Dumb criminals.

OMG, that is so crazy. i have some kind of similar experience as your but i didn't quit the job because the guy never harassed me.
ReplyDeleteOMG! That's crazy!!! Good thing you left!!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! that might actually make for a good story during an interview (maybe leave out the porn part)! good for you for having the instinct to leave!!
ReplyDeleteumm thats crazy.
ReplyDeleteand ive definitely had a bad job like that before, but i lasted 3 months. haha.
K
Oh wow. Good thing u got outta there when u did. Crepy much, the porn guy, that gave me the hibby jibbies!
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy! You could have been hauled into court if you hadn't left. That porn thing. Very weird. Almost like...huh...there is a reason they like having you in their office. Glad you got out but also glad you got a break from that other job. It's not worth the money to me to spend your whole life working.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear they're being prosecuted for their crimes. As far as your resume goes, I'd leave it on - you never know, it could be a great differentiator for you and help you stand out from the crowd :)
ReplyDeleteOh gross!!!
ReplyDeleteSome people are such perverts!
How uncalled for.
I'm glad you got out as soon as you did.
Sigh...
And, love the flashback to Myspace. Ohhh... I remember those days when I Myspaced Matt. And IM'd him. Yup. Those were the good ol'days. ;)
Way too funny - way to WORK for criminals Faith - NICE!
ReplyDeleteI imagine testifying would have sucked. Glad you were able to move on.
Holy crap! Well, it's something that you can tell your kids. That's so nuts.
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy! And pretty creepy!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Faith! That's so crazy and a little scary. I bet you are glad you got out of there! Ick!
ReplyDeleteGeez, that is too crazy! And yeah, the part about having a gap in your resume sucks. I'm not sure anyone would hold it against you, though, if you continued to list it, since a reasonable person wouldn't expect a receptionist to know all the secret dealings that were going on behind your back.
ReplyDeleteWhoa!! That's so freaky!! Glad you got out of there before things got sticky deep!
ReplyDelete*GAGS* at you had you come in while he was watching porn. Predatory A-hole. Too bad you didn't have video footage you probably could've sued for sexual harassment for that.
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy! And totally creepy of your former boss - GROSS! So glad you got out of that toxic environment.
ReplyDeletewow! that is crazy!!
ReplyDeleteYikes! Glad you got out of that place. Creepy and criminal. Bad combo!
ReplyDeleteWOW! i can't even imagine how i'd feel to enter a room with my boss watching porn... that's just crazy! glad you left the job quickly.
ReplyDeleteThis is so weird Faith, it's kind of creepy to imagine but at least you left and didn't get too involved, sounds like your bosses were into some crazy stuff that they featured on the news, must have been such a weird experience for you.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's nuts. Some men are just downright nasty pervs...sounds like your bosses fit that description to a T. Glad you got outta there!
ReplyDeletecrazy!!!! i just found out my old doctor is under trial for writing prescription for drugs in return cocaine. what the what?!
ReplyDeleteWhoa that is crazy! Thank goodness you got out of there when you did!!
ReplyDeleteThat's wild! Shoot, I am glad they weren't murderers or gangsters! And I am glad that you got out of there before you ended up having to testify against them!
ReplyDeleteUmmm wow! You have got to get super creative with your resume now thanks to these guys. SMH
ReplyDeleteFaith, that is wild! Good thing you got out when you did. When something feels or smells a little shady/fishy it usually is.
ReplyDeleteThis post made my eyeballs go big (your ex-bosses going to jail part), then wrinkle my nose in disgust (the porn part), and then laugh out loud (the missing a year on your resume part). I think it is TOTALLY interesting. I'd be a bit concerned if you were around crimes involving gun, mobsters, and/or murders!
ReplyDeleteI literally laughed out loud at this post. It's crazy how CRAZY some people are! At least you had time to MySpace Sean and grow your relationship! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWow! Good move, my friend! HA!
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine your blog posts back then!?
I hope you & Sean have a fun weekend. Aren't you happy it's FRIDAY!? YIPPEEEEE!
That's so crazy!!! So glad you got out of there when you did. The entire things just sounds so insane and sketchy lol
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend Faith xo
That is SO crazy!! I'm glad you got out of there when you did!
ReplyDeleteHOLY MOLY. Tell more stories! HAHA! This is crazyyyy and I learned so much about you by reading it!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh!!! Talk about creepy. OMG WTH! Okay, the porn thing really creeps me out. So glad you got out of there! Geez.
ReplyDeleteWhoa that's crazy! Glad you quit! And um, boss watching porn at work?? So very creepy. That is a sure sign to get outta there!
