When did the middle finger become an insult? I mean, it is just a finger. Why doesn’t anyone get mad at me when I give them the ring finger?
And when did a word become a curse word? It is just a word. Who decided that it was bad? If I said “Pork you” you wouldn’t get upset. Is there really such a thing as a bad word?
When did the expression “there’s an elephant in the room” become an expression? We all know there was no elephant in the room.
Oh, and who let the cat out of the bag. Why was the cat in the bag in the first place? Animal cruelty over there.
When was it decided that blonds were airheads? I would love to know the exact moment? Was there 10 blonds at one time who had a moment that wasn’t so smart and one brunette was there to correct them? Why was it decided that all blonds are airheads?
I also will never understand the saying, “Pigs must be flying.” Because that something you thought would never happen IS happening but pigs won’t ever fly.
So yea, that is where my head is at right now.
Do you ever wonder this stuff or is it just silly ole me?

I wonder silly things like this all the time! I LOVED reading this - totally needed something cute today =)
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy how many holes in the English language you've pointed out in this post Faith haha, this has me seriously thinking right now but I just can't wrap my head around any of them, why people need to say there's an elephant in the room is an expression confuses me.
ReplyDelete"Look who the cat dragged in"...when could a cat ever drag a person?! Ha, ha! You're not alone in this type of pondering :)
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh today, thanks!
You are too funny! i think this all the time and my blogs url and name has changed that's probably why you don't get directed right. i will make a me button.soon!
ReplyDeleteI've wondered about some of that same stuff too I think. Especially how certain curse words became curse words - who decided they were "bad?" This made me smile. (o:
ReplyDelete@Merely Marie: Exactly!
ReplyDeletehere's a different perspective: as a non-native english speaker, i don't really have a 'feel' for many of them. i use some of those expressions (including the curse words) because i was 'taught' to use them :)
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! Ive always thought that about the middle finger too...it's really pretty dumb.
ReplyDeletetoo much fun, sometimes i wonder about similar stuff too, lol
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd my absolute favorite..."Have your cake and eat it too" Ummm what else would I do with MY cake?? LOL
CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE!!
You are definitely not alone. I have wondered things like this before and most of the ones you mentioned I have questioned myself.
ReplyDeletei wonder these things all the time!!!
ReplyDeletesometimes we make up random and untrue answers to these questions.
I am going to show this post to Chris so that he can understand I am not the only person that thinks about this stuff...seriously.
ReplyDeleteI ALWAYS wonder about curse words! I just don't understand why a word was suddenly deemed bad or vulgar! It doesn't make any sense! Lol
ReplyDeleteAnd I think about the pigs flying expression a lot since I live in Cincinnati (AKA "Porkopolis"), and we have pigs EVERYWHERE... Our marathon is actually called "The Flying Pig."
Lol, I do wonder about crazy things all the time. I always thought the same thing about curse words...why can't I say certain words? Weird!
ReplyDelete"pork you". bahaha.
ReplyDeleteI just said this to my husband when he walked in the door. I'm not even kidding.
This just made my day.
Haha, I lovee this, especially the "pork you" part - too funny :)
ReplyDeleteLol...no kidding huh?! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI just gave you the pinky...now what??!? ;)
ReplyDeleteT.
HA!
ReplyDeleteha ha, I love this!!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I love this! I never understood the whole middle finger thing, especially. Also because it seems like other countries all have some other gesture that means that too. Totally random!
ReplyDeletei have seriously wondered when certain words became "bad".....like who decided that was going to be a bad word?! This stuff should be in history books!
ReplyDeleteI think those things too, especially curse words. Like who was the first person to get offended by the f word or even who is the person that gave it a definition.
ReplyDeleteHaha! You're not alone! I've wondered these things myself! :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent points... you know what I LOVE (sarcasm)? Those stupid phrases like "peel back the onion" "grease the skids" "low hanging fruit" management where I work say these phrases all the time and I just cringe when they do! haha Also, I hate the word moist... and panties - just terrible words!
